Role:ConductorDavid Hayes is a renowned conductor and cellist in the world of classical music. Born in 1961 in New York City, Hayes grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a classical pianist. Hayes began playing the cello at the age of six and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Hayes attended the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied cello with Harvey Shapiro and conducting with Otto-Werner Mueller. After graduating from Juilliard, Hayes went on to study conducting with Leonard Bernstein at Tanglewood and with Seiji Ozawa at the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Hayes began his career as a cellist, performing with the New York Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, and the American Symphony Orchestra. He also played with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and was a member of the Elysium String Quartet. In 1992, Hayes made his conducting debut with the American Symphony Orchestra, leading a performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 1. He quickly established himself as a talented conductor, and in 1995, he was appointed the music director of the New York Youth Symphony. Under Hayes' leadership, the New York Youth Symphony became one of the most respected youth orchestras in the country. Hayes led the orchestra on tours of Europe and Asia and collaborated with some of the world's most renowned soloists, including Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, and Joshua Bell. In addition to his work with the New York Youth Symphony, Hayes has conducted many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, and the London Symphony Orchestra. Hayes has also been a champion of contemporary music, conducting premieres of works by composers such as John Adams, Philip Glass, and Steve Reich. He has also collaborated with many of today's leading composers, including John Corigliano, Jennifer Higdon, and Michael Torke. Hayes has received numerous awards and honors for his work as a conductor and cellist. In 1999, he was awarded the Ditson Conductor's Award, which is given annually to a conductor who has demonstrated a commitment to the performance of American music. In 2001, he was awarded the ASCAP Concert Music Award for his contributions to contemporary music. Hayes has also been recognized for his work with young musicians. In 2007, he was awarded the American String Teachers Association's Artist Teacher Award, which is given to a string teacher who has demonstrated excellence in both teaching and performing. Hayes continues to be an active performer and conductor, and he is committed to bringing classical music to new audiences. He has been a guest conductor at many of the world's leading music festivals, including the Tanglewood Music Festival, the Aspen Music Festival, and the Ravinia Festival. Hayes is also a dedicated educator, and he has taught at many of the country's leading music schools, including the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, and the Curtis Institute of Music. He is currently the director of orchestral and conducting studies at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance.
