Born on May 12, 1985, in Salt Lake City, Utah, Mendenhall showed an early interest in music. He began playing the piano at the age of five and later picked up the cello at the age of eight. His parents, who were both music teachers, recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Mendenhall's early years were spent honing his skills on the cello. He studied under the tutelage of renowned cellists such as Lynn Harrell, Yo-Yo Ma, and Janos Starker. He also attended the Juilliard School in New York City, where he received a Bachelor of Music degree in cello performance. Mendenhall's talent and dedication to his craft soon caught the attention of the music world. He began performing with some of the most prestigious orchestras in the world, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He also performed as a soloist with many orchestras, including the Utah Symphony, the San Francisco Symphony, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. One of Mendenhall's most notable performances was his solo performance of the Dvorak Cello Concerto with the New York Philharmonic in 2010. The performance was widely praised by critics and cemented Mendenhall's reputation as one of the most talented cellists of his generation. Mendenhall has also won numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 2007, he won the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is awarded to outstanding young musicians who show exceptional talent and promise.
