Artist Info

Jonathan Dexter was born on May 15, 1985, in London, England. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his mother being a pianist and his father a cellist. From a young age, Dexter showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. He later picked up the cello at the age of eight and quickly became proficient in both instruments. Dexter attended the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied under renowned cellist Steven Isserlis. During his time at the academy, Dexter won several awards and competitions, including the prestigious Royal Academy of Music Club Prize. He also performed in numerous concerts and recitals, both as a soloist and as part of an ensemble. After graduating from the academy, Dexter began his professional career as a cellist. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented and versatile musician, and was soon in demand as a soloist and chamber musician. He performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. One of Dexter's most memorable performances was his solo debut at the Royal Albert Hall in London. He performed Dvorak's Cello Concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra to critical acclaim. The Guardian described his performance as "mesmerizing" and praised his "rich, warm tone and impeccable technique." Dexter's repertoire was wide-ranging, encompassing works from the Baroque era to contemporary music. He was particularly known for his interpretations of the works of Bach and Beethoven, and his recordings of their cello suites and sonatas were highly acclaimed. In addition to his solo work, Dexter was also a sought-after chamber musician. He performed with some of the world's leading string quartets, including the Emerson Quartet and the Tokyo Quartet. He also collaborated with pianist Martha Argerich and violinist Maxim Vengerov, among others. Dexter's talent and dedication to his craft were recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout his career. He was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 2010 for his services to music, and was also a recipient of the Royal Philharmonic Society's Instrumentalist Award. Tragically, Dexter's career was cut short when he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 2015. Despite undergoing treatment, his health continued to deteriorate, and he was forced to retire from performing. He passed away on June 10, 2017, at the age of 32. Dexter's legacy as a musician and performer lives on through his recordings and the memories of those who were fortunate enough to hear him play. He was widely regarded as one of the most talented and promising cellists of his generation, and his contributions to the world of classical music will not be forgotten.
