Ily Matthew Maniano was a Filipino classical music composer who was born on August 22, 1976, in Manila, Philippines. He was the youngest of four siblings and grew up in a musically inclined family. His father was a church choir conductor, and his mother was a pianist. Maniano's parents recognized his musical talent at a young age and encouraged him to pursue music. Maniano began his music education at the age of six, studying piano under his mother's guidance. He later studied at the University of Santo Tomas Conservatory of Music, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Composition. He continued his studies at the University of the Philippines Diliman, where he earned a Master of Music degree in Composition. Maniano's early compositions were heavily influenced by the works of classical composers such as Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. However, he also drew inspiration from Filipino folk music and incorporated elements of it into his compositions. His music was characterized by its melodic and harmonic complexity, as well as its use of unconventional time signatures. One of Maniano's most notable works is his Symphony No. 1, which he composed in 2003. The symphony is divided into four movements and is scored for a full orchestra. The first movement, "Allegro con brio," is characterized by its driving rhythms and intricate counterpoint. The second movement, "Adagio," is a slow and lyrical piece that features a solo violin. The third movement, "Scherzo," is a lively and playful piece that features a prominent horn section. The final movement, "Allegro molto," is a fast and energetic piece that brings the symphony to a thrilling conclusion. Maniano's other notable works include his Piano Concerto No. 1, which he composed in 2005. The concerto is scored for piano and orchestra and is characterized by its virtuosic piano writing and lush orchestration. Another notable work is his String Quartet No. 1, which he composed in 2007. The quartet is scored for two violins, viola, and cello and is characterized by its intricate counterpoint and use of unconventional time signatures. In addition to his work as a composer, Maniano was also a respected music educator. He taught composition and music theory at the University of Santo Tomas Conservatory of Music and the University of the Philippines Diliman. He was known for his dedication to his students and his ability to inspire them to reach their full potential. Tragically, Maniano's life was cut short when he passed away on December 23, 2010, at the age of 34. His death was a great loss to the Filipino classical music community, and his contributions to the field continue to be celebrated to this day. His music remains a testament to his talent and his passion for the art form, and his legacy lives on through the many students he inspired and the audiences who continue to be moved by his compositions.
