He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a renowned classical pianist and his mother a violinist. From a young age, Pickens showed a natural talent for music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Pickens received his formal music education at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied under the tutelage of some of the most renowned classical pianists of the time. He graduated with honors and went on to pursue a career as a concert pianist. Pickens made his debut performance at Carnegie Hall in 1995, where he received critical acclaim for his technical skill and emotional depth. This performance launched his career as a soloist, and he quickly became known for his virtuosic performances of the works of Beethoven, Chopin, and Liszt. Throughout his career, Pickens has performed with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. He has also collaborated with many of the world's leading conductors, including Leonard Bernstein, Sir Simon Rattle, and Daniel Barenboim. In addition to his performing career, Pickens is also a dedicated teacher. He has taught master classes at many of the world's leading music schools, including the Juilliard School, the Curtis Institute of Music, and the Royal Academy of Music in London. He is also a faculty member at the Aspen Music Festival and School, where he teaches each summer.
