He was the son of a famous Bulgarian composer, conductor, and musicologist, Vassil Stefanov. Simonov's father was a significant influence on his musical career, and he began his musical training at a young age. Simonov's early musical education was at the National Music School in Sofia, where he studied piano and composition. He later continued his studies at the State Academy of Music in Sofia, where he studied conducting under the tutelage of Professor Vladi Simeonov. Simonov's talent as a conductor was quickly recognized, and he was appointed as the principal conductor of the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra in 1962. He held this position for over a decade and was instrumental in establishing the orchestra's reputation as one of the finest in Eastern Europe. In 1974, Simonov was appointed as the principal conductor of the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he held until 1985. During his tenure, he led the orchestra on numerous international tours and recorded several critically acclaimed albums. Simonov's international career began in the early 1970s when he was invited to conduct the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented and dynamic conductor, and he was soon in demand by orchestras around the world. One of Simonov's most significant achievements was his appointment as the principal conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 1987. He held this position for five years and was widely credited with revitalizing the orchestra's sound and reputation.
