Thomas Mesa is a Cuban-American cellist who has made a name for himself in the classical music world with his virtuosic playing and passionate performances. Born in 1994 in Havana, Cuba, Mesa began playing the cello at the age of eight and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. Mesa's family moved to the United States when he was 12 years old, and he continued his cello studies with renowned teachers such as Andres Diaz and Hans Jørgen Jensen. He attended the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where he earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in cello performance. Throughout his career, Mesa has won numerous awards and accolades for his playing. In 2016, he was the winner of the prestigious Sphinx Competition, which is dedicated to promoting diversity in classical music. He has also won top prizes at the National Sphinx Competition, the Schadt String Competition, and the Alhambra Orchestra Concerto Competition. Mesa has performed as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Cleveland Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and the National Symphony Orchestra. He has also been a featured performer at major music festivals such as the Aspen Music Festival and the Caramoor Festival. One of Mesa's most notable performances was his debut with the Cleveland Orchestra in 2017, where he performed the Dvorak Cello Concerto under the baton of conductor Jahja Ling. The performance was widely praised for Mesa's technical skill and emotional depth, and cemented his reputation as one of the most exciting young cellists on the classical music scene. In addition to his solo work, Mesa is also an active chamber musician and has performed with many of the world's leading ensembles, including the Jupiter String Quartet and the Harlem Quartet. He is a member of the New Orchestra of Washington, a chamber orchestra based in the Washington, D.C. area. In 2020, Mesa released his debut album, "The Good Song," which features works by composers such as Bach, Beethoven, and Barber. The album was praised for Mesa's technical skill and emotional depth, and was named one of the best classical albums of the year by NPR Music.
