Hljómeyki is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2011 in Reykjavik, Iceland. The group is made up of six musicians who are all graduates of the Iceland Academy of the Arts. The members of the ensemble are: Hildigunnur Halldórsdóttir (flute), Emilía Rós Sigfúsdóttir (clarinet), Þórunn Ósk Marinósdóttir (violin), Sigrún Harðardóttir (viola), Sigurður Halldórsson (cello), and Tinna Þorsteinsdóttir (piano). The ensemble's name, Hljómeyki, means "sound oak" in Icelandic, and reflects the group's commitment to creating a strong and enduring musical foundation. From the beginning, the members of Hljómeyki have been dedicated to exploring a wide range of classical music repertoire, from the Baroque era to contemporary works. One of the highlights of Hljómeyki's early career was their performance at the 2012 Reykjavik Arts Festival, where they presented a program of works by Icelandic composers. The ensemble's performance was well-received by audiences and critics alike, and helped to establish Hljómeyki as one of Iceland's most promising young classical music groups. Since then, Hljómeyki has gone on to perform at a number of prestigious venues and festivals throughout Iceland and Europe. In 2014, the ensemble was invited to perform at the prestigious Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival in Germany, where they presented a program of works by Mozart, Brahms, and Icelandic composer Jón Leifs. In 2015, Hljómeyki released their debut album, "Hljómeyki," which features works by Icelandic composers Jón Leifs, Haukur Tómasson, and Atli Heimir Sveinsson. The album was well-received by critics, and helped to further establish Hljómeyki as one of Iceland's most exciting classical music ensembles. In addition to their performances and recordings, Hljómeyki is also committed to promoting classical music education and outreach. The ensemble regularly performs for school groups and community organizations, and has developed a number of educational programs designed to introduce young people to classical music.
