Milada Synkova was a Czech classical pianist and music educator who was born on January 1, 1923, in Prague, Czechoslovakia. She was the daughter of a prominent Czech composer, Alois Hába, who was known for his microtonal music. Milada grew up in a musical family and started playing the piano at a young age. She showed exceptional talent and was soon recognized as a prodigy. Milada received her formal music education at the Prague Conservatory, where she studied under the renowned pianist and pedagogue, Václav Štěpán. She graduated with honors in 1943 and continued her studies at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, where she earned her doctorate in musicology in 1947. Milada's career as a concert pianist began in the early 1950s, and she quickly gained recognition for her virtuosity and musicality. She performed extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and the United States, collaborating with many of the world's leading orchestras and conductors. Her repertoire was vast and included works by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Brahms, Debussy, and many others. One of Milada's most significant achievements was her performance of the complete cycle of Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas, which she played in a series of concerts in Prague in 1969. This was a monumental undertaking, and Milada's interpretation of these works was widely praised for its depth and insight. Milada was also a dedicated music educator and taught at the Prague Conservatory for over 30 years. She was known for her rigorous approach to teaching and for her ability to inspire her students to achieve their full potential. Many of her students went on to have successful careers as pianists and music educators. In addition to her performing and teaching career, Milada was also a prolific writer and musicologist. She published numerous articles and books on music, including a comprehensive study of the piano music of Bohuslav Martinů, a Czech composer whom she greatly admired. Milada received many honors and awards throughout her career, including the Order of Merit from the Czech Republic, the Medal of Merit from the Ministry of Culture, and the Medal of Honor from the Czech Academy of Sciences. She was also a member of the Czech Academy of Sciences and the International Musicological Society. Milada Synkova passed away on December 28, 2013, at the age of 90. She left behind a legacy as one of the most accomplished and respected pianists and music educators of her generation. Her recordings and performances continue to inspire and delight audiences around the world, and her contributions to the field of music will be remembered for generations to come.
