SKARK Ensemble is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2008 in Oslo, Norway. The ensemble is known for its unique approach to classical music, which combines traditional classical music with contemporary and experimental elements. The ensemble's name, SKARK, is an acronym for "Sinfonietta for Kvalitet, Aktivitet, Rettferdighet og Kreativitet" (Sinfonietta for Quality, Activity, Justice, and Creativity). The founding members of SKARK Ensemble were violinist and artistic director Kari Rønnekleiv, cellist Tanja Orning, and percussionist Håkon Stene. The ensemble has since expanded to include a rotating cast of musicians, including some of Norway's most talented classical musicians. SKARK Ensemble has performed at some of the world's most prestigious music festivals and venues, including the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Ultima Oslo Contemporary Music Festival, and the Donaueschingen Festival. The ensemble has also collaborated with some of the world's most renowned composers, including Helmut Lachenmann, Christian Wolff, and Alvin Lucier. One of the highlights of SKARK Ensemble's career was their performance of Helmut Lachenmann's "Schreiben" at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival in 2011. The performance was widely praised for its innovative approach to classical music and its ability to push the boundaries of what is possible in classical music. In addition to their performances, SKARK Ensemble has also received numerous awards and accolades for their work. In 2012, the ensemble was awarded the prestigious Norwegian Grammy Award for their album "SKARK," which was praised for its innovative approach to classical music. The ensemble has also been awarded the Norwegian Arts Council's "Ensemble of the Year" award multiple times.
