Role:ComposerBirth:1762Death:1830Marcos António da Fonseca Portugal was a Portuguese composer born on March 24, 1762, in Lisbon, Portugal. He was the son of a musician and composer, António Portugal, who was the chapel master at the Royal Chapel in Lisbon. Marcos Portugal grew up in a musical family and showed an early interest in music. He received his first music lessons from his father and later studied with the Italian composer David Perez. In 1783, Marcos Portugal was appointed as the chapel master at the Royal Chapel in Lisbon, succeeding his father. He held this position until 1794 when he left Portugal to work in Italy. During his time in Italy, he composed several operas, including "Le donne cambiate" and "Il duca di Foix." He also worked as a music teacher and conductor in Italy. In 1800, Marcos Portugal returned to Portugal and resumed his position as the chapel master at the Royal Chapel in Lisbon. He continued to compose operas, oratorios, and other sacred music. His most famous work is the oratorio "The Seven Words of Christ on the Cross," which was first performed in 1801. The oratorio was a huge success and was performed throughout Europe. Marcos Portugal's music is characterized by its melodic and harmonic richness. He was influenced by the Italian opera style and incorporated elements of it into his compositions. His music is also known for its dramatic intensity and emotional depth. In addition to his work as a composer, Marcos Portugal was also a music teacher. He taught at the National Conservatory of Lisbon and had many famous students, including the composer João Domingos Bomtempo. Marcos Portugal died on February 17, 1830, in Lisbon, Portugal.
