Lawrence Winters was a renowned classical music artist who was born on November 17, 1915, in Barbados, West Indies. He was the son of a Methodist minister and grew up in a musical family. His father played the organ, and his mother was a singer. Winters showed an early interest in music and began singing in church choirs at a young age. In 1936, Winters moved to England to pursue his musical career. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London and made his debut as a professional singer in 1941. He quickly gained recognition for his powerful bass-baritone voice and his ability to convey emotion through his performances. Winters' breakthrough came in 1945 when he was cast in the role of Porgy in the London production of George Gershwin's opera "Porgy and Bess." The production was a huge success, and Winters received critical acclaim for his performance. He went on to perform the role of Porgy in productions around the world, including in the United States, Australia, and Europe. In addition to his work in "Porgy and Bess," Winters performed in a variety of other operas and musicals. He was particularly known for his performances in the works of Benjamin Britten, including "Peter Grimes" and "The Turn of the Screw." He also performed in productions of "Don Giovanni," "The Marriage of Figaro," and "The Barber of Seville." Winters was a frequent performer on the BBC, both on radio and television. He also made several recordings, including a highly acclaimed recording of "Porgy and Bess" with the Glyndebourne Festival Orchestra. Throughout his career, Winters received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1957, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire for his services to music. He was also awarded the CBE in 1976. In 1981, he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society, one of the highest honors in classical music. Winters continued to perform well into his later years, despite suffering from health problems. He died on September 24, 1965, at the age of 49. His legacy lives on through his recordings and the memories of those who were fortunate enough to see him perform.
