Jeffrey Enns is a Canadian composer of classical music who was born in 1972 in Kitchener, Ontario. He grew up in a musical family, with both of his parents being music teachers. Enns began playing the piano at a young age and later learned to play the trumpet and French horn. He also sang in choirs and played in bands throughout his childhood and teenage years. Enns attended Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in composition. He then went on to complete a Master of Music degree in composition at the University of Toronto. During his studies, Enns was influenced by the works of composers such as Arvo Pärt, John Tavener, and Henryk Górecki, who were known for their minimalist and spiritual styles. Enns has composed a wide range of works, including choral music, chamber music, and orchestral music. His choral works are particularly notable, and he has become known for his ability to create beautiful and moving pieces that are often inspired by his Christian faith. Some of his most well-known choral works include "The Light of Christ," "The Road Home," and "The Lord is My Shepherd." In addition to his choral works, Enns has also composed several pieces for orchestra, including "The Four Seasons of the Canadian Flag," which was commissioned by the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony in 2017 to celebrate Canada's 150th anniversary. This piece is a musical representation of the four seasons in Canada, with each movement representing a different season and incorporating elements of Canadian folk music. Enns has also composed several chamber music works, including "The Seven Last Words of Christ," which was written for string quartet and premiered in 2015. In 2012, he was awarded the Ruth Watson Henderson Choral Composition Competition for his piece "The Light of Christ." Enns is currently a professor of music at Conrad Grebel University College in Waterloo, Ontario, where he teaches composition and music theory.
