Born on June 4, 1951, in Houston, Texas, Williams grew up in a family of musicians. Her father was a violinist, and her mother was a pianist. Williams started playing the cello at the age of six and quickly showed exceptional talent. Williams received her early music education at the Houston Music School and later at the Juilliard School in New York City. She studied under some of the most prominent cellists of the time, including Leonard Rose, Harvey Shapiro, and Lynn Harrell. Williams graduated from Juilliard with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1972 and a Master of Music degree in 1973. After completing her studies, Williams began her professional career as a cellist. She joined the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in 1979 and has been a member of the orchestra ever since. Williams has also performed as a soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. Throughout her career, Williams has received numerous awards and honors for her outstanding contributions to classical music. In 1982, she was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, which recognizes exceptional young musicians. Williams was also the recipient of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra's "Excellence in the Arts" award in 1999. One of the highlights of Williams' career was her performance of the Elgar Cello Concerto with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in 2000. The performance was recorded and released on CD, receiving critical acclaim and earning Williams a Grammy nomination for Best Instrumental Soloist Performance with Orchestra. Williams has also been a dedicated teacher and mentor to young musicians. She has served on the faculty of the Carnegie Mellon University School of Music since 1980 and has taught master classes at many prestigious music schools around the world. In addition to her work as a cellist, Williams is also an advocate for the arts and has served on the boards of several arts organizations, including the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Throughout her career, Williams has been praised for her beautiful tone, technical mastery, and expressive playing.
