Winds of the Berlin Philharmonic is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1988 by members of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. The ensemble is made up of the orchestra's principal wind players, including flutist Emmanuel Pahud, oboist Albrecht Mayer, clarinetist Andreas Ottensamer, bassoonist Stefan Schweigert, and horn player Sarah Willis. The ensemble's founding was inspired by the desire of its members to explore the rich repertoire of chamber music for wind instruments. The group's first performance took place in Berlin in 1988, and since then, they have become one of the most renowned wind ensembles in the world. Winds of the Berlin Philharmonic has performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Berlin Philharmonie. They have also collaborated with some of the world's most celebrated musicians, including pianist Lang Lang, violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. One of the ensemble's most notable performances was their 2009 concert at the Salzburg Festival, where they performed Mozart's Serenade No. 10 in B-flat major, K. 361, also known as the "Gran Partita." The performance was widely praised for its precision, clarity, and musicality, and was later released as a recording on the Deutsche Grammophon label. Winds of the Berlin Philharmonic has also been recognized with numerous awards and accolades throughout their career. In 2003, they received the Echo Klassik award for their recording of Mozart's Serenade No. 11 in E-flat major, K. 375. They have also been awarded the Diapason d'Or, the Gramophone Award, and the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik. In addition to their performances and recordings, Winds of the Berlin Philharmonic is also committed to music education and outreach. They regularly hold masterclasses and workshops for young musicians, and have established a scholarship program to support the next generation of wind players.
