Norlén's first major work was his Symphony No. 1, which he composed in 1980. The symphony was well-received and established Norlén as a promising young composer. In addition to his orchestral and chamber music works, Norlén also composed several choral works. His choral music is often based on Swedish folk songs and is known for its simple, yet powerful, harmonies. One of his most famous choral works is his setting of the Swedish folk song "Ack Värmeland, du sköna," which has become a staple of the Swedish choral repertoire. Norlén's music has been performed by many of the world's leading orchestras and ensembles, including the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra.
