Thomas Hastings was a prominent American composer of classical music in the 19th century. He was born on October 15, 1784, in Washington, Connecticut, to a family of musicians. His father, Dr. Seth Hastings, was a singing master and composer, and his mother, Rebecca, was a singer and pianist. Thomas was the youngest of their nine children, and he showed an early interest in music. At the age of 14, Thomas began studying music with his father and other local teachers. He quickly became proficient in singing, playing the piano, and composing music. In 1804, he moved to New York City to pursue a career in music. He worked as a music teacher and organist at several churches, including the First Presbyterian Church and the Mercer Street Presbyterian Church. In 1818, Hastings became the music director at the Park Street Church in Boston, Massachusetts. He held this position for 23 years and became one of the most influential figures in the American church music scene. He composed hundreds of hymns and anthems, many of which are still sung today. His most famous hymn is "Rock of Ages," which he wrote in 1830. Hastings was also a prolific composer of instrumental music. He wrote several piano sonatas, string quartets, and other chamber music pieces. His most famous instrumental work is the "Grand March" from his opera "The Fair One with the Golden Locks." This piece was a favorite of President Abraham Lincoln, who requested it to be played at his second inauguration in 1865. Hastings was known for his conservative musical style, which was heavily influenced by European classical music. He believed that music should be simple, clear, and accessible to everyone. He was a strong advocate for the use of music in religious worship and believed that it could be a powerful tool for spiritual transformation. In addition to his work as a composer and music director, Hastings was also a music publisher. He founded the firm of Hastings, Crosby, and Co. in 1832, which became one of the leading music publishers in the United States. The firm published many of Hastings' own compositions as well as works by other American composers. Hastings died on May 15, 1872, in New York City. He was 87 years old. His legacy as a composer and music educator lives on today, and his hymns and anthems continue to be sung in churches around the world. He was a pioneer in the development of American church music and helped to establish a distinctively American musical style.
