EstoniaBirth:1969Period:ContemporaryGenre:ChamberTõnu Kõrvits is a renowned Estonian composer of classical music. He was born on August 31, 1969, in Tallinn, Estonia. Kõrvits grew up in a family of musicians, and his father was a well-known composer and conductor. From a young age, Kõrvits showed a keen interest in music, and he began playing the piano and the guitar at the age of six. Kõrvits studied music at the Tallinn Music High School, where he was taught by some of the most prominent Estonian composers of the time. He then went on to study composition at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, where he was mentored by renowned composer Jaan Rääts. Kõrvits' early works were heavily influenced by the Estonian folk music tradition, and he often incorporated folk melodies and rhythms into his compositions. His first major work, "Kalevipoeg," was a symphonic poem based on the Estonian national epic of the same name. The piece was well-received and helped establish Kõrvits as a rising star in the Estonian classical music scene. In the years that followed, Kõrvits continued to compose works that drew on Estonian folk music and mythology. His "Kreek's Notebook" for choir and orchestra, based on the poetry of Estonian writer Juhan Liiv, won the Estonian Music Council's annual award for best composition in 1998. Kõrvits' music has been performed by some of the world's leading orchestras and ensembles, including the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra. He has also collaborated with a number of prominent soloists, including violinist Baiba Skride and pianist Kristjan Randalu. In recent years, Kõrvits has expanded his musical palette, incorporating elements of jazz and world music into his compositions. His 2018 album "Mirror" features a mix of classical and jazz musicians, and was praised for its innovative approach to blending different musical styles. Kõrvits' most recent work, "Lageda laulud" (Songs of Lagedi), is a cycle of songs based on the poetry of Estonian writer Juhan Viiding. The piece was commissioned by the Estonian National Male Choir and premiered in 2020 to critical acclaim. Throughout his career, Kõrvits has been recognized for his contributions to Estonian music. He has won numerous awards, including the Estonian Music Council's annual award for best composition four times. In 2019, he was awarded the Order of the White Star, one of Estonia's highest honors, for his contributions to Estonian culture. Kõrvits' music is characterized by its emotional depth and sensitivity, as well as its ability to evoke the natural beauty of Estonia's landscapes and folk traditions. His works have been praised for their ability to connect with audiences on a deep and personal level, and for their ability to capture the essence of Estonian culture and identity.More....
