Musica Temprana is a classical music ensemble that specializes in the performance of early music from Latin America and Spain. The group was founded in 2001 by Adrián Rodríguez Van der Spoel, a Dutch musician who had a passion for the music of the colonial period in Latin America. Van der Spoel had studied musicology at the University of Utrecht and had become interested in the music of the colonial period while working on his thesis. He discovered that there was a rich tradition of music in Latin America that had been largely forgotten, and he was determined to bring this music back to life. Van der Spoel began by assembling a group of musicians who shared his passion for early music. The group started out as a small ensemble, but it quickly grew in size as more musicians joined. Today, Musica Temprana is made up of a core group of 10 musicians, but the ensemble can expand to include up to 20 musicians depending on the repertoire. The main members of Musica Temprana are Adrián Rodríguez Van der Spoel (director, baroque guitar, and vocals), Johanna Novom (soprano), Andrés Miravete (tenor), and Guillermo Pérez (harpsichord). Other members of the ensemble include musicians who play a variety of instruments, including violins, viola da gamba, cello, bassoon, and percussion. Musica Temprana has performed at many prestigious venues and festivals around the world, including the Early Music Festival in Utrecht, the Festival Internacional Cervantino in Mexico, and the Festival de Música Antigua de Úbeda y Baeza in Spain. The ensemble has also collaborated with other musicians and ensembles, including the Netherlands Bach Society and the Huelgas Ensemble. One of the highlights of Musica Temprana's career was their performance at the Festival Internacional Cervantino in 2010. The ensemble performed a program of music from the colonial period in Latin America, including works by composers such as Juan de Araujo, Gaspar Fernandes, and Tomás de Torrejón y Velasco. The performance was well-received by both audiences and critics, and it helped to raise awareness of the rich tradition of early music in Latin America. Musica Temprana has also received several awards and accolades for their work. In 2012, the ensemble was awarded the prestigious Dutch Classical Music Award, which is given to the best classical music ensemble in the Netherlands. The award recognized Musica Temprana's commitment to bringing early music from Latin America and Spain to a wider audience. In addition to their performances, Musica Temprana is also committed to education and outreach. The ensemble regularly gives workshops and masterclasses on early music, and they have worked with schools and community groups to introduce young people to the music of the colonial period in Latin America. Overall, Musica Temprana is a unique and talented ensemble that has made a significant contribution to the world of early music. Through their performances, recordings, and educational work, they have helped to bring the music of the colonial period in Latin America and Spain back to life, and they continue to inspire audiences around the world with their passion and dedication.
