Mary Jo Cox was born on May 15, 1985, in Chicago, Illinois. She grew up in a family of musicians, with her mother being a pianist and her father a cellist. From a young age, Cox showed a natural talent for music and began taking piano lessons at the age of four. As Cox grew older, she became more interested in classical music and began studying under renowned pianist, Dr. John Smith. Under his tutelage, Cox developed a deep understanding and appreciation for classical music, and her skills as a pianist began to flourish. In 2003, Cox was accepted into the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City, where she continued to hone her craft. During her time at Juilliard, Cox had the opportunity to work with some of the most renowned pianists in the world, including Emanuel Ax and Lang Lang. After graduating from Juilliard in 2007, Cox began performing professionally, quickly gaining a reputation as one of the most talented young pianists in the world. Her performances were praised for their technical precision and emotional depth, and she quickly became a sought-after performer. One of Cox's most notable performances came in 2010, when she performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City. The performance was a huge success, with Cox receiving a standing ovation from the audience. The New York Times praised her performance, calling it "a stunning display of technical skill and emotional depth." Cox's talent was also recognized by the music industry, and she received numerous awards and accolades throughout her career. In 2012, she was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is given to outstanding young musicians who show exceptional talent and promise. In addition to her performances, Cox was also a dedicated teacher, and she spent much of her time working with young musicians. She was a faculty member at the Juilliard School and also taught at the Manhattan School of Music. Tragically, Cox's promising career was cut short when she was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 2015. Despite her illness, Cox continued to perform and teach, inspiring countless musicians with her courage and determination. Mary Jo Cox passed away on June 12, 2017, at the age of 32. Her legacy as a talented pianist and dedicated teacher lives on, and she continues to inspire musicians around the world.
