Role:ComposerPeriod:ContemporaryGenre:ChamberChoralJanika Vandervelde was a classical music composer born on August 22, 1933, in Chicago, Illinois. She was the daughter of a Dutch immigrant father and a mother of Scottish descent. Her father was a musician and a composer, and he played a significant role in her early musical education. Vandervelde began playing the piano at the age of four and started composing music when she was just six years old. She attended the Chicago Musical College, where she studied composition with Alexander Tcherepnin and piano with Rudolph Ganz. She later earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Illinois and a Master of Music degree from Northwestern University. Vandervelde's early compositions were influenced by the music of her father, who was a composer of Dutch art songs. Her early works were characterized by their lyrical melodies and tonal harmonies. She was also influenced by the music of the Second Viennese School, particularly the works of Arnold Schoenberg. In the 1960s, Vandervelde became interested in electronic music and began experimenting with tape manipulation and other electronic techniques. Her electronic works were characterized by their use of unusual sounds and textures, and they often explored themes related to science and technology. One of Vandervelde's most significant works is her Symphony No. 1, which was composed in 1967. The symphony is a large-scale work for orchestra and electronic tape, and it explores themes related to space and the cosmos. The work was premiered by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Seiji Ozawa and was later performed by the New York Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra. Vandervelde's other notable works include her Piano Concerto, which was composed in 1972 and premiered by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra with Vandervelde as the soloist. The concerto is a virtuosic work that showcases Vandervelde's skills as a pianist and composer. Another significant work is her String Quartet No. 1, which was composed in 1980. The quartet is a complex and challenging work that explores themes related to time and memory. The work has been performed by many of the world's leading string quartets, including the Kronos Quartet and the Arditti Quartet. Vandervelde was also a prolific composer of vocal music, and her works in this genre include numerous art songs and choral works. Her vocal music is characterized by its expressive melodies and sensitive treatment of text. In addition to her work as a composer, Vandervelde was also a dedicated teacher and mentor. She taught composition at the University of Illinois and Northwestern University and was a mentor to many young composers. Vandervelde's contributions to the world of classical music were recognized with numerous awards and honors. She was a recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship, the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award. She was also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Janika Vandervelde passed away on December 31, 2019, at the age of 86.
