James Umble is a renowned classical music artist who has made a significant contribution to the world of music. Born on August 22, 1952, in the United States, Umble grew up in a family that valued music. His father was a jazz musician, and his mother was a singer. As a child, Umble was exposed to different genres of music, which sparked his interest in music. Umble began his music education at an early age, starting with the piano. However, he soon discovered his love for the saxophone and began to focus on it. He attended the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan, where he studied under the tutelage of Donald Sinta, a renowned saxophonist. Umble later went on to study at the University of Michigan, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in saxophone performance. After completing his studies, Umble began his career as a professional musician. He performed with various orchestras and ensembles, including the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, and the Michigan Opera Theatre Orchestra. He also performed with jazz legends such as Dizzy Gillespie, Clark Terry, and Phil Woods. Umble's talent and dedication to his craft did not go unnoticed. He received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 1980, he won the prestigious Concert Artists Guild International Competition, which helped launch his career as a soloist. He also won the National Endowment for the Arts Solo Recitalist Fellowship in 1981 and the Michigan Council for the Arts Individual Artist Grant in 1982. One of the highlights of Umble's career was his performance at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. in 1983. He performed as a soloist with the National Symphony Orchestra, playing the Concerto for Saxophone and Orchestra by Jacques Ibert. The performance was well-received, and Umble received a standing ovation from the audience. Umble's passion for music extended beyond performing. He was also a dedicated educator and mentor. He taught at various institutions, including the University of Michigan, the University of Toledo, and the Interlochen Arts Academy. He also conducted masterclasses and workshops around the world, sharing his knowledge and expertise with aspiring musicians. In addition to his classical music career, Umble was also an accomplished jazz musician. He performed with various jazz ensembles and recorded several albums, including "The James Umble Quartet" and "The James Umble Trio." Umble's dedication to music and his contributions to the world of classical and jazz music have earned him numerous accolades and awards. In 2012, he was inducted into the Michigan Jazz Hall of Fame. He was also awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Arts Commission of Greater Toledo in 2016. Sadly, James Umble passed away on December 31, 2019, at the age of 67. However, his legacy lives on through his music and the countless musicians he inspired and mentored throughout his career.
