The TCU Percussion Ensemble is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1974 at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. The ensemble is made up of undergraduate and graduate students who are studying percussion at TCU. The ensemble is directed by Dr. Brian West, who has been the director since 2001. The TCU Percussion Ensemble has a long history of excellence in performance and education. The ensemble has performed at numerous festivals and conferences, including the Percussive Arts Society International Convention, the Texas Music Educators Association Convention, and the Midwest Clinic. The ensemble has also performed with world-renowned percussionists, including Evelyn Glennie, Michael Burritt, and Steve Houghton. The TCU Percussion Ensemble has won numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2019, the ensemble won the Percussive Arts Society International Percussion Ensemble Competition, which is considered one of the most prestigious percussion ensemble competitions in the world. The ensemble has also won the PAS International Percussion Ensemble Competition in 1998 and 2002. The TCU Percussion Ensemble has also released several recordings over the years. Their most recent recording, "TCU Percussion Ensemble: Live at PASIC 2019," features live performances from the 2019 Percussive Arts Society International Convention. The TCU Percussion Ensemble is made up of a diverse group of students who come from all over the world. The ensemble's members have gone on to successful careers in music education, performance, and composition. Some notable alumni of the ensemble include Michael Burritt, who is a world-renowned percussionist and composer, and Mark Ford, who is a professor of percussion at the University of North Texas and a world-renowned percussionist and composer. The TCU Percussion Ensemble's repertoire is diverse and includes works from a wide range of composers and styles. The ensemble performs works by classical composers such as Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart, as well as contemporary composers such as Steve Reich, John Cage, and David Lang. The ensemble also performs works by percussionists and composers who are affiliated with TCU, such as Michael Burritt and Mark Ford. The TCU Percussion Ensemble's performances are known for their high energy and virtuosic playing. The ensemble's members are skilled in a wide range of percussion instruments, including marimba, vibraphone, xylophone, snare drum, bass drum, and timpani.
