Bernhard Schmid the Elder was a German composer and musician who lived during the Baroque period. He was born in the town of Augsburg in 1630, and his family was known for their musical talents. His father, Johann Schmid, was a well-known organist and composer, and his mother, Maria, was a singer. Bernhard Schmid began his musical education at a young age, studying with his father and other local musicians. He showed great promise as a composer and performer, and by the time he was a teenager, he was already playing in local churches and performing for private audiences. In 1650, Schmid moved to Vienna to study with the famous composer Johann Heinrich Schmelzer. Schmelzer was one of the most important composers of the Baroque period, and his influence can be heard in Schmid's later works. Schmid spent several years in Vienna, studying with Schmelzer and other prominent musicians, and he quickly established himself as a talented composer and performer. In 1655, Schmid returned to Augsburg, where he became the court musician for the Elector of Bavaria. He held this position for several years, during which time he composed many works for the court and for private patrons. Some of his most famous works from this period include his Sonata in D Major for Violin and Continuo and his Sonata in G Major for Viola da Gamba and Continuo. In 1660, Schmid moved to Nuremberg, where he became the court musician for the Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach. He held this position for several years, during which time he composed many works for the court and for private patrons. Some of his most famous works from this period include his Sonata in A Minor for Violin and Continuo and his Sonata in C Major for Viola da Gamba and Continuo. In 1665, Schmid moved to Leipzig, where he became the court musician for the Elector of Saxony. In 1670, Schmid returned to Augsburg, where he spent the rest of his life. He continued to compose and perform, and he became one of the most respected musicians in Germany. Bernhard Schmid the Elder died in Augsburg in 1690, at the age of 60. He left behind a legacy of beautiful music that continues to be performed and enjoyed today.
