Francis Burt was a renowned classical music composer who was born on January 31, 1926, in Austria. He was the son of a prominent Austrian composer, Heinrich Burt, who was a professor of music at the Vienna Academy of Music. Francis Burt grew up in a musical family and was exposed to music from a very young age. He started playing the piano at the age of four and began composing music when he was just six years old. Burt's family fled Austria in 1938 due to the Nazi occupation, and they settled in England. Burt continued his musical education in England and studied composition with Benjamin Britten and Lennox Berkeley. He also studied piano with Solomon and composition with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. Burt's early compositions were influenced by the music of his father and the Viennese School of composers, including Arnold Schoenberg and Anton Webern. However, he later developed his own unique style, which was characterized by a blend of tonal and atonal elements. Burt's first major composition was his Symphony No. 1, which he completed in 1952. The symphony was well-received and established Burt as a promising young composer. He went on to compose a number of other orchestral works, including his Symphony No. 2, which was premiered by the London Symphony Orchestra in 1957. In addition to his orchestral works, Burt also composed a number of chamber music pieces, including his String Quartet No. 1, which was premiered by the Amadeus Quartet in 1955. He also composed several vocal works, including his Three Songs for Soprano and Piano, which were premiered by the soprano Heather Harper in 1960. Burt's music was characterized by its complexity and intellectual depth. He was known for his use of intricate rhythms and harmonies, as well as his incorporation of serialism and other modernist techniques. However, his music was also noted for its emotional expressiveness and lyricism. Burt's career was interrupted in the 1960s when he suffered a nervous breakdown. He spent several years in a psychiatric hospital and was unable to compose during this time. However, he eventually recovered and resumed his career as a composer. In the 1970s, Burt began to incorporate more tonal elements into his music, and his compositions became more accessible to a wider audience. He continued to compose prolifically throughout the rest of his career, and his works were performed by some of the world's leading orchestras and ensembles. Some of Burt's most notable works include his Symphony No. 3, which was premiered by the BBC Symphony Orchestra in 1972, and his String Quartet No. 3, which was premiered by the Arditti Quartet in 1985. He also composed several works for solo piano, including his Piano Sonata No. 2, which was premiered by the pianist Peter Serkin in 1981. Burt was the recipient of numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art in 1996. He was also a member of the Royal Academy of Music and the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Francis Burt passed away on July 3, 2012, at the age of 86. He left behind a legacy of innovative and emotionally powerful music that continues to be performed and admired by musicians and audiences around the world.
