He was the son of a Swiss father and a French mother, and his family moved to Paris when he was a child. Niedermeyer showed an early interest in music and began studying piano and composition at a young age. In 1821, Niedermeyer entered the Paris Conservatory, where he studied under the renowned composer Luigi Cherubini. He quickly distinguished himself as a talented composer and won several prizes for his compositions. After completing his studies, Niedermeyer traveled to Italy, where he studied with Gioachino Rossini and became interested in the music of the Catholic Church. Upon his return to Paris, Niedermeyer founded the École de musique religieuse de Paris (School of Religious Music of Paris) in 1853, which was dedicated to the study and performance of sacred music. He also became the conductor of the choir at the Church of Saint-Eustache in Paris, where he introduced many works of sacred music to the public. Niedermeyer's most famous work is his oratorio, "La Fuite en Égypte" (The Flight into Egypt), which was first performed in 1856. The oratorio tells the story of the Holy Family's flight into Egypt and is notable for its use of Gregorian chant and other elements of Catholic liturgy. The work was well-received by audiences and critics alike and helped establish Niedermeyer as one of the leading composers of sacred music in France. In addition to his work in sacred music, Niedermeyer also composed several operas, including "Stradella" (1837) and "Marie Stuart" (1844). These works were less successful than his sacred music, but they still demonstrate Niedermeyer's skill as a composer and his ability to write music in a variety of styles. Niedermeyer died on March 14, 1861, in Paris, at the age of 58. He is remembered as one of the most important composers of sacred music in France and as a pioneer in the study and performance of Catholic liturgical music. His legacy continues to be felt in the many choirs and schools of music that he founded, which continue to promote the study and performance of sacred music to this day.More....
