Central State University Chorus is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been entertaining audiences for over 70 years. The ensemble was founded in 1949 by Dr. William Grant Still, a prominent African American composer and conductor. Dr. Still was also the first African American to conduct a symphony orchestra in the United States. The Central State University Chorus is made up of talented students from Central State University, a historically black university located in Wilberforce, Ohio. The ensemble is directed by Dr. Jeremy Winston, who has been leading the group since 2015. Dr. Winston is an accomplished conductor and music educator who has worked with several prestigious ensembles throughout his career. Over the years, the Central State University Chorus has performed at numerous venues across the United States and around the world. The ensemble has also collaborated with several renowned musicians and conductors, including Robert Shaw, Leontyne Price, and Jessye Norman. One of the highlights of the Central State University Chorus's career was their performance at the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. The ensemble sang several spirituals and hymns, including "We Shall Overcome," which became an anthem for the civil rights movement. The Central State University Chorus has also received several awards and accolades throughout their history. In 2019, the ensemble was awarded the National Association for Music Education's Exemplary Program Award, which recognizes outstanding music programs in schools and universities across the country. In addition to their performances and awards, the Central State University Chorus is also committed to community outreach and education. The ensemble regularly performs at local schools and community events, and they also offer workshops and masterclasses for aspiring musicians.
