The Baltimore Chamber Orchestra is a classical music ensemble that has been entertaining audiences for over 30 years. Founded in 1984 by Anne Harrigan, the orchestra has become a staple of the Baltimore music scene, known for its exceptional performances and dedication to promoting classical music. Anne Harrigan, a graduate of the Peabody Conservatory of Music, founded the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra with the goal of creating a professional ensemble that would showcase the talents of local musicians. Harrigan, who served as the orchestra's music director and conductor for over 20 years, was committed to providing opportunities for young musicians to perform alongside seasoned professionals. Over the years, the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra has featured a number of talented musicians, including concertmaster Madeline Adkins, principal cellist Bo Li, and principal oboist Jane Marvine. These musicians, along with many others, have helped to establish the orchestra as one of the premier classical music ensembles in the region. The Baltimore Chamber Orchestra has performed at a number of prestigious venues, including the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and Carnegie Hall in New York City. The orchestra has also collaborated with a number of renowned soloists, including pianist Leon Fleisher and violinist Hilary Hahn. One of the highlights of the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra's history was its performance at the 2009 National Orchestral Institute Festival at the University of Maryland. The orchestra, under the direction of conductor Markand Thakar, performed a program of works by Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms to critical acclaim. In addition to its performances, the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra has also been recognized for its contributions to the community. The orchestra has been awarded grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Maryland State Arts Council, and has been recognized by the Baltimore City Council for its commitment to promoting classical music. The Baltimore Chamber Orchestra has also been committed to promoting music education.
