Marguerite Canal was a French composer born on May 17, 1890, in Suresnes, France. She was the daughter of a music teacher and began her musical education at a young age. She studied piano with her mother and later with Alfred Cortot, a renowned pianist and teacher. She also studied composition with Paul Vidal at the Paris Conservatory. Canal's early compositions were influenced by the Impressionist style of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. Her first major work, the Suite for Orchestra, was premiered in 1913 and received critical acclaim. The suite was followed by several other orchestral works, including the Poème symphonique and the Suite symphonique. In addition to her orchestral works, Canal also composed chamber music, including a Sonata for Violin and Piano and a Trio for Flute, Viola, and Harp. She was particularly interested in the harp and wrote several works for the instrument, including the Sonata for Harp and the Rhapsodie for Harp and Orchestra. Canal's music was well-received during her lifetime, and she was recognized as one of the leading female composers of her time. She was awarded the Prix de Rome in 1920, becoming the first woman to receive the prestigious award. She also received the Legion of Honor in 1936. Despite her success, Canal's career was cut short by her untimely death in 1978. However, her music continues to be performed and recorded today, and she is remembered as a pioneering female composer who helped pave the way for future generations of women in classical music.
