The Saint Louis Chamber Chorus is a renowned classical music ensemble based in St. Louis, Missouri. Founded in 1956 by the late Dr. Robert Bergt, the choir has become one of the most respected and celebrated choral groups in the United States. Dr. Bergt, a professor of music at Washington University in St. Louis, established the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus with the goal of creating a professional-level choir that would perform a wide range of choral music, from the Renaissance to contemporary works. The choir's first performance was in December 1956, and it quickly gained a reputation for its high level of musicianship and innovative programming. Over the years, the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus has performed in some of the most prestigious concert halls and music festivals in the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Edinburgh International Festival. The choir has also collaborated with many of the world's leading conductors and orchestras, including the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. One of the highlights of the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus's career was its performance at the 1991 American Choral Directors Association National Convention, where it was the only choir selected to perform a full concert. The choir's performance was widely praised for its technical precision, musicality, and emotional depth. The Saint Louis Chamber Chorus has also been recognized with numerous awards and honors over the years. In 1995, the choir was awarded the prestigious ASCAP/Chorus America Award for Adventurous Programming, which recognizes choirs that demonstrate a commitment to performing new and innovative works. The choir has also been awarded the Missouri Arts Award for Excellence in the Arts, and has been named the Best Choral Group in St. Louis by the Riverfront Times. One of the hallmarks of the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus's programming is its commitment to performing new and lesser-known works alongside more familiar repertoire. The choir has commissioned and premiered numerous works by contemporary composers, including Stephen Paulus, Libby Larsen, and Chen Yi. The choir has also performed many works by lesser-known composers from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, bringing these neglected works to a wider audience. The Saint Louis Chamber Chorus has also been a leader in the field of choral education and outreach. The choir has worked with numerous schools and community organizations to provide choral workshops and performances, and has established a scholarship program for young singers. The choir has also released several recordings, including a critically acclaimed album of works by the American composer Samuel Barber.
