Klari Jasz was a Hungarian classical pianist who was born on October 17, 1927, in Budapest, Hungary. She was the daughter of a music teacher and began playing the piano at a young age. Her talent was quickly recognized, and she was accepted into the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest at the age of 14. Jasz studied under some of the most renowned piano teachers of the time, including Zoltan Kodaly and Bela Bartok. She quickly gained a reputation as a prodigious talent, and her performances were praised for their technical precision and emotional depth. In 1949, Jasz won the prestigious Franz Liszt Piano Competition, which launched her career as a professional pianist. She began performing throughout Europe, and her reputation continued to grow. In 1952, she made her debut in the United States, performing with the New York Philharmonic under the direction of Leonard Bernstein. Over the course of her career, Jasz performed with some of the world's most renowned orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Vienna Philharmonic. She also collaborated with many of the most celebrated conductors of the time, including Herbert von Karajan, Georg Solti, and Claudio Abbado. Jasz was known for her interpretations of the works of Franz Liszt, and she recorded several albums of his music throughout her career. She was also a champion of contemporary music, and she premiered works by many of the leading composers of the time, including Gyorgy Ligeti and Karlheinz Stockhausen. In addition to her performances, Jasz was also a respected teacher. She taught at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, and many of her students went on to have successful careers as pianists. Throughout her career, Jasz received numerous awards and honors. In 1966, she was awarded the Kossuth Prize, the highest honor given to artists in Hungary. She was also awarded the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary, and in 1997, she was awarded the Hungarian Heritage Award. Jasz continued to perform and teach until her death on January 21, 2013, at the age of 85. She left behind a legacy as one of the most talented and respected pianists of her generation, and her recordings and performances continue to inspire and captivate audiences around the world.
