Janna Gandelsman is a renowned classical music artist who has made a name for herself as a pianist and chamber musician. Born in Moscow, Russia, in 1985, Gandelsman showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. Her parents, both professional musicians, recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Gandelsman's early musical education was rigorous and comprehensive. She studied at the Moscow Central Music School, where she received training in piano, music theory, and composition. She also attended masterclasses with some of the most renowned pianists of the time, including Vladimir Ashkenazy and Elisso Virsaladze. In 2003, Gandelsman moved to Israel to continue her studies at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance. There, she studied with renowned pianist and pedagogue Arie Vardi, who had a profound influence on her musical development. Gandelsman credits Vardi with teaching her the importance of discipline, focus, and attention to detail in her playing. After completing her studies in Israel, Gandelsman moved to the United States to pursue a career as a professional musician. She enrolled in the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where she earned a Master of Music degree in piano performance. While at the conservatory, Gandelsman studied with acclaimed pianist and pedagogue Wha Kyung Byun, who helped her refine her technique and develop her musical voice. Since completing her studies, Gandelsman has established herself as a highly sought-after pianist and chamber musician. She has performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Royal Albert Hall in London. She has also collaborated with some of the most renowned musicians of our time, including violinist Itzhak Perlman and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Gandelsman's repertoire is diverse and includes works from a wide range of composers, from Bach and Beethoven to contemporary composers like John Adams and Philip Glass. She is particularly known for her interpretations of the music of Sergei Rachmaninoff, whose works she has performed extensively throughout her career. In addition to her performing career, Gandelsman is also a dedicated teacher and mentor. She has taught at several prestigious music schools, including the New England Conservatory of Music and the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She is also a frequent guest lecturer and masterclass teacher at universities and music schools around the world. Throughout her career, Gandelsman has received numerous awards and accolades for her musical achievements. In 2009, she was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, which recognizes outstanding young musicians who show exceptional promise for a career in classical music. She has also been a recipient of the Gilmore Young Artist Award and the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship. Despite her many accomplishments, Gandelsman remains humble and dedicated to her craft.
