He was born in 1610 in Champigny-sur-Veude, France, and was the son of a musician. Lambert began his musical education at a young age, studying with his father and later with the composer Jean de Cambefort. Lambert's talent as a singer was recognized early on, and he became a member of the royal chapel in 1636. He also served as a music teacher to the children of King Louis XIV and was appointed as the director of music for the queen's chamber in 1661. As a composer, Lambert is best known for his vocal music, particularly his airs de cour. These were songs that were typically performed in the court of Louis XIV and were characterized by their elegant melodies and refined lyrics. Lambert's airs de cour were highly regarded during his lifetime and were influential in the development of French Baroque music. One of Lambert's most famous works is his collection of airs de cour, Leçons de ténèbres. This work consists of nine pieces that were intended to be performed during the Holy Week services. The music is characterized by its mournful and introspective tone, and it is considered to be one of the most beautiful examples of French Baroque music. Lambert also composed a number of operas, although few of them have survived to the present day. His most famous opera, Les amours de Ragonde, was first performed in 1648 and was well-received by audiences. The opera was notable for its use of recitative, a style of singing that was used to advance the plot of the opera. In addition to his work as a composer, Lambert was also a respected singing teacher. He wrote a treatise on singing, entitled Leçons de chant, which was published in 1660. The treatise was highly influential and was used as a guide by many singers during the Baroque period. Lambert's influence on French Baroque music was significant, and his work was highly regarded by his contemporaries. He died in Paris in 1696, leaving behind a legacy of beautiful music that continues to be appreciated by music lovers today.More....
