Role:ComposerDavid Marlatt is a Canadian composer and arranger of classical music. He was born in 1965 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Marlatt grew up in a musical family, with both his parents being music teachers. He began playing the trumpet at a young age and quickly developed a passion for music. Marlatt attended the University of Alberta, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in trumpet performance. He then went on to study at the University of Miami, where he earned a Master of Music degree in trumpet performance and music theory. During his time at the University of Miami, Marlatt also studied composition with Dennis Kam. After completing his studies, Marlatt began his career as a professional musician and composer. He has performed with a number of orchestras and ensembles, including the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, the Miami Symphony Orchestra, and the Canadian Brass. Marlatt has also been a member of the trumpet faculty at the University of Miami and the University of Alberta. As a composer, Marlatt has written a wide range of works for various ensembles, including orchestras, wind ensembles, brass quintets, and string quartets. His compositions are known for their melodic and accessible style, as well as their technical demands. One of Marlatt's most well-known works is his "Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra." This piece was commissioned by the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and premiered in 1995. The concerto is a virtuosic showcase for the trumpet, with fast and intricate passages that require a high level of technical skill. The piece has been performed by numerous orchestras around the world and has become a staple of the trumpet repertoire.
