New Morse Code is a contemporary classical music duo consisting of cellist Hannah Collins and percussionist Michael Compitello. The duo was formed in 2009 while both members were studying at the Yale School of Music. Since then, they have become known for their innovative and boundary-pushing performances, which often incorporate elements of theater and multimedia. Hannah Collins was born in 1986 in New York City. She began playing the cello at the age of six and went on to study at the Juilliard School, where she earned her Bachelor of Music degree. She then went on to study at the Yale School of Music, where she met Michael Compitello. Michael Compitello was born in 1984 in New Jersey. He began playing percussion at the age of 10 and went on to study at the Eastman School of Music, where he earned his Bachelor of Music degree. He then went on to study at the Yale School of Music, where he met Hannah Collins. After forming New Morse Code in 2009, the duo quickly gained recognition for their unique approach to classical music. They began performing at venues across the United States, including the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and the Bang on a Can Marathon in New York City. In 2012, New Morse Code released their debut album, Simplicity Itself, which featured works by composers such as David Lang and Paul Lansky. The album received critical acclaim and helped to establish the duo as rising stars in the contemporary classical music scene. Since then, New Morse Code has continued to push the boundaries of classical music with their innovative performances. They have collaborated with a wide range of artists, including choreographers, visual artists, and filmmakers, to create multimedia performances that incorporate elements of theater and dance. One of the duo's most notable performances was their 2016 collaboration with choreographer Pam Tanowitz and composer Caroline Shaw. The performance, titled "Blueprint," was a multimedia work that combined live music, dance, and video projections. It premiered at the Joyce Theater in New York City and received rave reviews from critics. In addition to their performances, New Morse Code has also been recognized for their contributions to the classical music world. In 2015, they were awarded a Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning Grant, which allowed them to commission new works from composers such as Christopher Cerrone and Tonia Ko. New Morse Code has also been active in promoting diversity and inclusivity in classical music. In 2018, they launched a project called "The Blackbird Project," which aimed to highlight the work of female and non-binary composers. The project included a series of performances and recordings of works by composers such as Caroline Shaw and Missy Mazzoli.
