Walter Charles was born on June 30, 1943, in Newark, New Jersey. He grew up in a musical family, with his father being a jazz pianist and his mother a singer. Charles began playing the piano at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. He later learned to play the trumpet and the French horn. Charles attended the Juilliard School in New York City, where he studied voice and opera. He made his professional debut in 1970 in the Broadway production of "Two Gentlemen of Verona." He went on to perform in several other Broadway productions, including "The Phantom of the Opera," "La Cage aux Folles," and "Sweeney Todd." Charles was known for his powerful and expressive voice, which made him a sought-after performer in the world of classical music. He performed with some of the most prestigious orchestras in the world, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. One of Charles' most memorable performances was his portrayal of the Phantom in "The Phantom of the Opera." He received critical acclaim for his performance and was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical. He also won a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actor in a Musical for his performance in "La Cage aux Folles." In addition to his work on Broadway, Charles was also a prolific recording artist. He recorded several albums of classical music, including "The Art of French Song" and "The Art of German Song."
