Jonathan Girard is a renowned conductor, composer, and educator in the world of classical music. Born in Vancouver, Canada in 1979, Girard showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. He later picked up the trumpet and became a member of the Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra, where he discovered his passion for conducting. Girard went on to study music at the University of British Columbia, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in trumpet performance. He continued his studies at the University of Michigan, where he received a Master of Music degree in orchestral conducting. During his time at Michigan, Girard had the opportunity to work with renowned conductors such as Kenneth Kiesler and Gustav Meier. After completing his studies, Girard began his career as a conductor, working with orchestras and ensembles across North America and Europe. He has served as the music director of the Prince George Symphony Orchestra, the University of British Columbia Symphony Orchestra, and the Vancouver Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra. He has also conducted the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, among others. Girard is known for his innovative programming and his commitment to contemporary music. He has premiered numerous works by Canadian and international composers, and has collaborated with artists from a wide range of genres, including jazz, rock, and electronic music. In 2015, he was appointed the artistic director of the Turning Point Ensemble, a Vancouver-based ensemble dedicated to performing new and experimental music. In addition to his work as a conductor, Girard is also an accomplished composer. His works have been performed by orchestras and ensembles around the world, and he has received commissions from organizations such as the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra of Canada. His music is characterized by its rhythmic complexity, harmonic richness, and emotional depth. Girard has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 2009, he was awarded the Heinz Unger Award for Conducting, which recognizes outstanding young conductors in Canada. In 2012, he was named one of the Top 20 Canadian Classical Musicians Under 30 by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. In 2016, he was awarded the Jean-Marie Beaudet Award for Orchestral Conducting by the Canada Council for the Arts. One of Girard's most notable performances was his debut with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in 2013. He conducted a program that included works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Canadian composer John Estacio. The performance was widely praised for its energy, precision, and emotional depth. Girard's ability to connect with both the musicians and the audience was particularly noted. Another highlight of Girard's career was his performance with the National Arts Centre Orchestra in 2017.
