Heinrich Finck was a German composer of the Renaissance era, born in 1444 in the town of Bamberg. He was the son of a musician and grew up in a musical family, which likely influenced his own interest in music. Finck began his musical education as a choirboy in the Bamberg Cathedral, where he received training in singing and music theory. After completing his education in Bamberg, Finck moved to Vienna, where he worked as a court musician for the Habsburgs. He quickly gained a reputation as a skilled composer and musician, and was soon appointed as the court composer for Emperor Maximilian I. Finck remained in this position for over 20 years, during which time he composed a significant amount of music for the imperial court. One of Finck's most notable works is his Missa super Ave Maria, a mass setting that incorporates the melody of the popular Marian hymn "Ave Maria." This work is considered to be one of the earliest examples of a mass based on a pre-existing melody, and it was widely popular during Finck's lifetime. Another notable work is his Choralis Constantinus, a collection of over 350 pieces of music for the church year. This collection was intended to provide music for every Sunday and feast day of the year, and it is considered to be one of the most important collections of Renaissance church music. In addition to his work as a composer, Finck was also a skilled performer on a variety of instruments, including the lute, viol, and organ. He was known for his improvisational skills, and was often called upon to perform at court events and other social gatherings. Despite his success as a composer and musician, Finck's life was not without its challenges. He lived during a time of political and religious upheaval, and his position as a court musician meant that he was often caught up in the political machinations of the day. He also struggled with health issues throughout his life, and was forced to take extended breaks from his work on several occasions. Despite these challenges, Finck remained dedicated to his music, and his legacy as a composer and musician continues to be celebrated today. His works are still performed and studied by musicians and scholars around the world, and his contributions to the development of Renaissance music are widely recognized. Heinrich Finck died in Vienna in 1527, leaving behind a rich legacy of music that continues to inspire and delight audiences today.
