The Dartington String Quartet is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with their exceptional performances for over four decades. The quartet was founded in 1969 at the Dartington Summer School in Devon, England, by four young musicians who shared a passion for chamber music. The founding members of the quartet were Colin Sauer and Malcolm Latchem on violin, Keith Lovell on viola, and Michael Evans on cello. The quartet quickly gained recognition for their outstanding musicianship and unique sound, which was characterized by their deep understanding of the music they played and their ability to communicate it with great clarity and emotion. Over the years, the quartet has undergone several changes in its lineup, but its commitment to excellence and its dedication to the art of chamber music have remained constant. Today, the quartet is composed of violinists Johnathan Sparey and Yi Yao, violist Hannah Shaw, and cellist Richard Lester. They have collaborated with some of the most renowned musicians of our time, including pianist Peter Donohoe, clarinetist Michael Collins, and cellist Steven Isserlis. One of the highlights of the quartet's career was their performance of the complete cycle of Beethoven's string quartets at the Dartington International Summer School in 1985. This was a monumental achievement that required an extraordinary level of musicianship and dedication, and it cemented the quartet's reputation as one of the finest chamber ensembles in the world. The quartet has also been recognized with numerous awards and accolades throughout their career. In 1975, they were awarded the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society Award for their outstanding contribution to chamber music. They have also been awarded the Gramophone Award for their recording of the complete cycle of Shostakovich's string quartets, which is widely regarded as one of the finest recordings of this repertoire. In addition to their performances and recordings, the Dartington String Quartet has also been committed to the education and development of young musicians. They have taught at some of the most prestigious music schools and conservatories, including the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.
