Brett Dietz is a renowned percussionist, composer, and educator in the world of classical music. Born on August 22, 1973, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Dietz grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a trumpet player, and his mother was a pianist. Dietz started playing the drums at the age of six and soon developed a passion for percussion instruments. Dietz attended Indiana University, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Percussion Performance in 1995. He then went on to earn a Master of Music degree in Percussion Performance from the University of Michigan in 1997. During his time at these institutions, Dietz studied under some of the most renowned percussionists in the world, including Anthony Cirone, Michael Udow, and Salvatore Rabbio. After completing his education, Dietz began his career as a professional percussionist. He has performed with numerous orchestras and ensembles, including the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and the New World Symphony. He has also performed with some of the most renowned conductors in the world, including Leonard Slatkin, Michael Tilson Thomas, and John Williams. In addition to his work as a performer, Dietz is also an accomplished composer. He has written numerous works for percussion, including solo pieces, chamber music, and works for orchestra. His compositions have been performed by some of the most renowned percussionists in the world, including Evelyn Glennie, Colin Currie, and She-e Wu. Dietz has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 2001, he was awarded the ASCAP Foundation Morton Gould Young Composer Award for his composition "The Eye of Ra." In 2003, he was awarded the Percussive Arts Society Composition Contest for his work "The Soul Has Many Motions." In 2005, he was awarded the Indiana University School of Music Distinguished Alumni Award. One of the highlights of Dietz's career was his performance at the 2002 World Percussion Festival in Seoul, South Korea. He performed his composition "The Eye of Ra" with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Myung-Whun Chung. The performance was met with critical acclaim and solidified Dietz's reputation as one of the most talented percussionists and composers of his generation. Dietz is also an accomplished educator. He has taught at numerous institutions, including the University of Georgia, the University of Miami, and the University of Texas at Austin. He is currently a professor of percussion at Louisiana State University, where he has been on the faculty since 2007. In addition to his work as a professor, Dietz is also a sought-after clinician and guest artist. He has given masterclasses and clinics at numerous institutions, including the Juilliard School, the Eastman School of Music, and the Royal Academy of Music in London.
