Blackman attended the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff, Wales, where she studied classical singing. In 2006, she auditioned for the BBC reality show "How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?" which was searching for a lead actress to play Maria in the West End production of "The Sound of Music." Blackman made it to the final three contestants but ultimately lost to Connie Fisher. Despite not winning the competition, Blackman's talent was recognized, and she was offered the role of Nellie Forbush in the UK tour of "South Pacific." She received critical acclaim for her performance and was nominated for a TMA Award for Best Performance in a Musical.
