Sharq Ensemble is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2001 in Tehran, Iran. The ensemble is known for its unique blend of traditional Persian music and Western classical music, creating a sound that is both familiar and exotic. The founding members of Sharq Ensemble were all graduates of the Tehran Conservatory of Music, and they shared a passion for exploring the intersection of Persian and Western music. The ensemble's original lineup included four musicians: Hossein Behroozinia on barbat (a Persian lute), Saeed Farajpouri on kamancheh (a Persian bowed string instrument), Behnam Samani on tombak (a Persian hand drum), and Hamid Motebassem on tar (a Persian plucked string instrument). From the beginning, Sharq Ensemble was committed to creating new works that blended Persian and Western music. The ensemble's first major performance was in 2002, when they premiered a new composition by Motebassem called "The Garden of Memories" at the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art. The piece was a huge success, and it set the tone for the ensemble's future work. Over the years, Sharq Ensemble has expanded its lineup and collaborated with a wide range of musicians and composers. Today, the ensemble includes more than a dozen musicians, including vocalists, percussionists, and instrumentalists. Some of the ensemble's most notable members include Behroozinia, Farajpouri, Samani, Motebassem, and vocalist Sepideh Raissadat. One of the highlights of Sharq Ensemble's career was their performance at the 2006 Edinburgh International Festival. The ensemble performed a program of traditional Persian music and new works that blended Persian and Western music, and they received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. The performance helped to raise the ensemble's profile on the international stage, and they have since performed at major festivals and venues around the world. In addition to their live performances, Sharq Ensemble has also released several albums of their music. Their debut album, "The Garden of Memories," was released in 2003 and featured the composition that had premiered at the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art. The album was a critical and commercial success, and it helped to establish the ensemble as one of the leading voices in the world of Persian and Western music. Over the years, Sharq Ensemble has received numerous awards and accolades for their work. In 2007, they were awarded the Best World Music Album award at the Iranian Music Critics Awards for their album "One," which featured collaborations with a number of Western musicians. The ensemble has also been recognized for their contributions to the preservation and promotion of Persian music, and they have been invited to perform at cultural events and festivals around the world.
