Born on December 22, 1945, in Rotterdam, Netherlands, Flipse showed an early interest in music and began playing the violin at the age of six. He later switched to the cello and went on to become one of the most accomplished cellists of his generation. Flipse's musical education began at the Rotterdam Conservatory, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned cellist and pedagogue, André Navarra. He later continued his studies at the Paris Conservatory, where he studied with the legendary cellist, Pierre Fournier. Flipse's training under these two great masters helped him develop a deep understanding of the cello and its repertoire. Flipse's career as a professional musician began in 1969 when he joined the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra as its principal cellist. He remained with the orchestra for over 30 years, during which time he established himself as one of the leading cellists in the Netherlands. In addition to his work with the Rotterdam Philharmonic, Flipse also performed as a soloist and chamber musician, collaborating with some of the most distinguished musicians of his time. One of the highlights of Flipse's career was his performance of the Elgar Cello Concerto with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra in 1985. The performance was widely acclaimed and cemented Flipse's reputation as a master of the cello. He went on to perform the concerto with many other orchestras around the world, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. Flipse's other notable performances include his interpretation of the Bach Cello Suites, which he recorded in 1990. The recording was highly praised for its technical brilliance and emotional depth, and it remains one of the definitive recordings of the suites. Flipse also performed and recorded the cello concertos of Dvorak, Schumann, and Shostakovich, among others. In addition to his work as a performer, Flipse was also a respected teacher and mentor. He taught at the Rotterdam Conservatory for many years and was known for his rigorous and demanding approach to teaching. Many of his students went on to have successful careers as professional musicians. Flipse's contributions to the world of music were recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 1995, he was awarded the Order of Orange-Nassau, one of the highest honors in the Netherlands, for his services to music. He was also awarded the Rotterdam Music Prize in 1997 and the Edison Classical Music Award in 2000.
