Mary Kathleen Ernst was born on May 12, 1985, in Chicago, Illinois. She grew up in a family of musicians, with her mother being a pianist and her father a cellist. From a young age, Ernst showed a natural talent for music and began playing the violin at the age of four. Ernst's parents recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. She began taking private lessons with renowned violin teachers and quickly progressed in her skills. By the age of 10, Ernst had already won several local competitions and was performing in public concerts. In 1997, Ernst was accepted into the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City, where she studied under the guidance of renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman. During her time at Juilliard, Ernst honed her skills and developed a unique style that blended classical and contemporary music. After graduating from Juilliard in 2001, Ernst began performing professionally and quickly gained recognition for her talent. She performed with several major orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. In 2005, Ernst released her debut album, "Kathleen Ernst: Violin Virtuoso," which received critical acclaim and established her as a rising star in the classical music world. The album featured a mix of classical and contemporary pieces, showcasing Ernst's versatility and range as a musician. Over the years, Ernst has continued to perform and record music, earning numerous awards and accolades along the way. In 2010, she won the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, which recognizes outstanding young musicians and provides financial support to help them further their careers. Ernst has also been recognized for her contributions to music education. She has taught master classes at several universities and conservatories, and has served as a mentor to young musicians. In 2015, she was awarded the Sphinx Medal of Excellence, which recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to diversity in the arts.
