His father was a pianist and his mother was a singer, and they encouraged their children to pursue their musical interests. Travlos began his musical education at a young age, studying piano and music theory. He showed a natural talent for composition and began writing his own music as a teenager. He went on to study at the Athens Conservatory, where he received a degree in composition. After completing his studies, Travlos began working as a composer and music teacher. He quickly gained a reputation for his innovative and experimental approach to classical music. His compositions were characterized by their use of unconventional harmonies and rhythms, as well as their incorporation of elements from other musical traditions. Travlos's early works included a number of chamber pieces and solo works for piano and other instruments. One of his most notable early works was his Sonata for Piano, which was praised for its complex harmonies and virtuosic piano writing. In the 1980s, Travlos began to gain international recognition for his work. He was invited to participate in a number of prestigious music festivals, including the Salzburg Festival and the Venice Biennale.
