Brooklyn Baroque is a classical music ensemble that specializes in performing Baroque music on period instruments. The ensemble was founded in 2000 by a group of musicians who shared a passion for historically informed performance practices and a desire to explore the rich repertoire of Baroque music. The founding members of Brooklyn Baroque were violinist and artistic director Andrew Appel, flutist and recorder player Sandra Miller, cellist and gambist Lisa Terry, and harpsichordist and organist Rebecca Pechefsky. All four musicians were highly accomplished performers with extensive experience in the field of early music. From the beginning, Brooklyn Baroque was committed to performing on period instruments, which are replicas of the instruments that were used during the Baroque era. This approach allows the ensemble to recreate the sound and style of Baroque music as it was originally intended to be heard. Over the years, Brooklyn Baroque has expanded its roster to include a number of other talented musicians, including violinist Cynthia Roberts, violist Jessica Troy, and bassoonist Dominic Teresi, among others. The ensemble typically performs as a chamber group, with anywhere from two to eight musicians depending on the repertoire. One of the highlights of Brooklyn Baroque's career was its performance at the Boston Early Music Festival in 2003. The festival is one of the most prestigious early music events in the world, and Brooklyn Baroque was honored to be invited to perform. The ensemble's program, which included works by Bach, Handel, and Telemann, was well-received by both audiences and critics. Another notable performance by Brooklyn Baroque was its appearance at the Berkeley Early Music Festival in 2008. The festival is one of the largest early music events in the United States, and Brooklyn Baroque was one of the featured ensembles. The ensemble's program, which included works by Vivaldi, Corelli, and Biber, was praised for its virtuosity and musicality. In addition to its performances at major festivals, Brooklyn Baroque has also given numerous concerts and recitals throughout the United States and Europe. The ensemble has performed at venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, among others. Brooklyn Baroque has also been recognized for its recordings, which have received critical acclaim and won several awards. The ensemble's debut album, "Bach and Before," was released in 2002 and was named one of the top classical recordings of the year by The New York Times. The album features works by Bach, Biber, and Telemann, among others, and showcases the ensemble's virtuosity and musicality. Another notable recording by Brooklyn Baroque is "The Trio Sonata in 18th-Century France," which was released in 2010. The album features works by French composers such as Couperin, Rameau, and Leclair, and was praised for its elegance and refinement. In addition to its performances and recordings, Brooklyn Baroque is also committed to education and outreach. The ensemble regularly gives masterclasses and workshops for students and young musicians, and has worked with organizations such as the Juilliard School and the New York Youth Symphony. Overall, Brooklyn Baroque is a highly respected and accomplished ensemble that has made significant contributions to the field of early music.
