Judy Holliday was an American actress and singer who was born on June 21, 1921, in New York City. She was the daughter of Abe and Helen Tuvim, who were both Russian Jewish immigrants. Her father was a printer, and her mother was a homemaker. Holliday grew up in the Bronx and attended Julia Richman High School in Manhattan. Holliday showed an early interest in music and theater. She began taking piano lessons at the age of five and later learned to play the accordion. She also performed in school plays and sang in the school choir. After graduating from high school, Holliday attended the University of Michigan, where she studied drama and music. In 1939, Holliday returned to New York City and began performing in nightclubs and theaters. She adopted the stage name "Judy Holliday" and became known for her comedic timing and singing voice. In 1946, she was cast in the Broadway musical "Born Yesterday," which was a critical and commercial success. Holliday played the role of Billie Dawn, a ditzy blonde who becomes educated and empowered with the help of a journalist. Her performance earned her a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play. Holliday's success on Broadway led to a career in Hollywood. In 1950, she starred in the film adaptation of "Born Yesterday," which was directed by George Cukor. Holliday's performance as Billie Dawn earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress. She was also nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. Holliday continued to work in Hollywood throughout the 1950s, appearing in films such as "The Marrying Kind" (1952), "It Should Happen to You" (1954), and "Bells Are Ringing" (1960). She also continued to perform on stage, starring in the Broadway musical "Bells Are Ringing" in 1956. Holliday received a Tony Award nomination for her performance. In addition to her acting career, Holliday was also a talented singer. She recorded several albums, including "Trouble Is a Man" (1958) and "Holliday with Mulligan" (1961), which she recorded with jazz musician Gerry Mulligan. Holliday's singing style was characterized by her clear, bright voice and her ability to convey emotion through her phrasing. Holliday's career was cut short by her untimely death in 1965. She had been diagnosed with breast cancer in 1957 and underwent a mastectomy. She continued to work throughout her illness, but her health declined in the early 1960s. Holliday died on June 7, 1965, at the age of 43. Despite her short career, Holliday left a lasting impact on the world of entertainment. She was known for her comedic talent, her singing voice, and her ability to convey complex emotions on stage and screen. Her performances in "Born Yesterday" and the film adaptation earned her critical acclaim and cemented her place in the pantheon of American actresses. Holliday's legacy continues to inspire performers today, and her contributions to the world of classical music and theater will not be forgotten.
