Splice Ensemble is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2014 by a group of musicians who shared a passion for contemporary classical music. The ensemble is based in Birmingham, UK, and is made up of a core group of six musicians, although the ensemble often expands to include additional performers for specific performances. The founding members of Splice Ensemble are violinist Tanya Cracknell, cellist Lucy Railton, pianist Richard Uttley, clarinetist Stuart King, flutist Ruth Morley, and percussionist Julian Warburton. All of the members of the ensemble are accomplished musicians who have performed with a variety of orchestras and ensembles throughout the UK and internationally. The ensemble's mission is to promote contemporary classical music and to collaborate with composers to create new works. Splice Ensemble has commissioned and premiered works by a number of composers, including Michael Wolters, Howard Skempton, and Richard Baker. One of the highlights of Splice Ensemble's early performances was a concert at the Birmingham Conservatoire in 2015, which featured the premiere of Michael Wolters' "Splice" for ensemble and electronics. The piece was commissioned by the ensemble and was inspired by the idea of "splicing" together different musical elements to create something new. Since then, Splice Ensemble has performed at a number of prestigious venues and festivals, including the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, the Cheltenham Music Festival, and the Aldeburgh Festival. The ensemble has also collaborated with a number of other musicians and ensembles, including the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group and the London Sinfonietta. In addition to performing, Splice Ensemble is also committed to education and outreach. The ensemble has worked with a number of schools and community groups to introduce young people to contemporary classical music and to encourage them to explore their own creativity. Splice Ensemble has received a number of awards and accolades for their work. In 2016, the ensemble was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society's Henderson Chamber Ensemble Award, which recognizes outstanding chamber ensembles in the UK. The ensemble was also nominated for a British Composer Award in 2017 for their performance of Richard Baker's "The Tyranny of Fun." Overall, Splice Ensemble is a dynamic and innovative ensemble that is dedicated to promoting contemporary classical music and collaborating with composers to create new works. With their commitment to education and outreach, as well as their impressive performances and awards, Splice Ensemble is sure to continue making a significant impact on the classical music world for years to come.More....
