He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a jazz pianist and his mother a classical pianist. Patterson started playing the piano at a young age and showed a natural talent for music. He attended the Juilliard School of Music in New York City, where he studied composition under the tutelage of Vincent Persichetti. Patterson's early works were heavily influenced by the music of his parents, with jazz and classical elements blending together in his compositions. His first major work, "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra," was premiered in 1972 and received critical acclaim. The piece showcased Patterson's unique style, with its intricate rhythms and harmonies. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Patterson continued to compose works that blended jazz and classical music. His "Symphony No. 1" premiered in 1978 and was hailed as a masterpiece.
