He was the son of a well-known Latvian composer, Jāzeps Kalniņš, who was a professor at the Latvian State Conservatory. Kalsons grew up in a musical family and was exposed to music from a young age. He began his musical studies at the Riga Music School, where he studied piano and composition. In 1955, Kalsons entered the Latvian State Conservatory, where he studied composition with his father, Jāzeps Kalniņš. He also studied piano with Arvīds Zilinskis and conducting with Voldemārs Ozoliņš. Kalsons graduated from the conservatory in 1960 with a degree in composition. After graduation, Kalsons worked as a music teacher and conductor in various schools and choirs in Latvia. He also continued to compose music, and his works began to gain recognition in Latvia and abroad. In 1965, he won first prize in the Latvian Composers' Competition for his Symphony No. 1. Kalsons' music is characterized by its lyricism, clarity, and emotional depth. He was influenced by the Latvian folk music tradition, as well as by the works of Western classical composers such as Beethoven, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky. His compositions include symphonies, concertos, chamber music, and vocal works. One of Kalsons' most famous works is his Symphony No. 2, which he composed in 1970. It was premiered in Riga in 1971 and was later performed in other countries, including the United States. Kalsons' other notable works include his Piano Concerto No. 1, which he composed in 1968. It was premiered by the Latvian pianist Raimonds Pauls and has since been performed by many other pianists. Another important work by Kalsons is his String Quartet No. 2, which he composed in 1975. The quartet is a complex and challenging work that explores the possibilities of the string quartet genre. It has been performed by many renowned string quartets, including the Borodin Quartet and the Emerson Quartet. Kalsons' music has been performed by many orchestras and ensembles around the world, including the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra.
